The 69th Season
Montana’s longest running symphony returns for its 69th season, with the return of Maestro Luis Millan.  This season will host a wide variety of pieces, including those from Brahms, Wagner, and Schubert.  We will also be having a guest performance from Chris Burns, Principal Double Bassist from the Tacoma Symphony.

Our volunteer musicians will be working hard to present 4 regular season shows, including the yearly Holiday Show and a public performance at the Original Mine Yard.  Please join us for this exciting year of performances. Season tickets can be purchased online or at the Mother Lode Theatre box office.

Last Show of the 68th Season
Saturday, April 21 2018 at 7:30 p.m.
Sarah Hamsworth
Bach Beethoven, and Mussorgsky are the composers for this closing concert of the 68th season. Sarah Harmsworth, winner of the recent MASO competition joins the orchestra for a violin concerto by Bach, with the evening ending with the Mussorgsky classic, Pictures at an Exhibition.

Summer Concert at the Original
Thursday, August 16th
Symphony at Original Mine
The Butte Symphony will perform on Thursday, August 16, at 9:00 p.m. at the Original Mine Frame, for the annual Symphony Under the Silver Screen. The orchestra will perform the musical scores composed by Ben Model (www.silentfilmmusic.com) for two silent films: Laurel and Hardy in the 1928 film “Wrong Again”, and Buster Keaton in the 1921  film “The Goat”.  This free event is for the entire family so come to the Original and experience Montana’s Original Symphony Orchestra in an evening of music, movies, and laughter.

Virtuoso classical guitarist Maestro Luis Millán opens the 69th Season with the beautiful and soaring Guitar Concerto #1 by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. The program will also include Johannes Brahms’ youthful and optimistic Serenade No. 2, and Dances from Danserye by Tielman Susato.

Holidays with the Symphony
Saturday, December 15 at 7:30 p.m.
Symphony Playing
The Butte Symphony is joined by the Butte High, Butte Central, and Anaconda High School Chorales for the annual Holiday Concert. The 100 voices and 50 member orchestra will treat you to beautiful Holiday classics from throughout Europe and the Americas.  Join the members of the chorales and symphony in singing classic carols at the end of the concert.

Four Centuries of Music from Northern Europe
Saturday, February 16 at 7:30 p.m.
Trumpets Playing
Join the Butte Symphony on a tour of Northern Europe with music that spans over four hundred years. From Dutch Renaissance dances by Michael Praetorius, through Richard Wagner’s German operas, and ending up in the English countryside as interpreted by Edward Elgar and Gustav Holst. We may even visit Downton Abbey!

Double Bass Concerto and Schubert’s 6th Symphony
Saturday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m.

Principal Double Bassist from the Tacoma Symphony, Chris Burns, joins Maestro Millan and the Butte Symphony for Concerto in D Major for Contrabass and Orchestra by Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf. Also on tap for the evening is Franz Schubert’s 6th Symphony, and Aaron Copland’s Outdoor Overture.

Originally from South Florida, Chris Burns has been principal bassist of the Tacoma Symphony since 2009. The Tacoma News Tribune has described his playing as “effortlessly clear and lyrical…with calm virtuosity and thoughtful expression.”  In addition to soloing with the TSO, Chris has been a featured soloist on the Second City Chamber Series, University of Puget Sound’s Jacobsen series and on the Barry Lieberman and Friends recital series at the University of Washington.  Chris is an active freelance musician in the Northwest, having performed with the Seattle Symphony, Seattle Opera, Pacific Northwest Ballet, and Northwest Sinfonietta. Prior to moving to Tacoma, Chris was solo bassist for the Houston Bach Society and Opera in the Heights, as well as a substitute bassist with the Houston Grand Opera. Chris received his Bachelors of Music from the New England Conservatory in Boston, and was a Fulbright Scholar at the Universität für Musik in Vienna, Austria.  In addition to his performing career, Chris is also a dedicated string educator, and is the orchestra teacher at Narrows View Intermediate School in the University Place School District.

An Evening of Cello, Fire, and Dances
Saturday, October 26th at 7:30 p.m.

Maestro Luis Millan and Cellist Adam Collins open the 70th Season of the Butte Symphony with Edouard Lalo's dramatic Cello Concerto in D Minor.  The Program will also feature Hungarian Dances by Zoltan Kodaly, Manuel do Falla's Ritual of Fire Dance, and Modest Mussorgsky's perennial Halloween classic, Night on Bald Mountain.

Holidays with the Symphony
Saturday, December 14th at 7:30 p.m.

The Butte Symphony is again joined by the Butte and Anaconda High Chorales for the annual Holiday Concert.  The orchestra and chorales will feature beautiful holiday-themed music from around the world. Join in with the chorales and orchestra for the singing of classic carols at the grand finale of this concert.

The Orchestra will treat you to an evening of silent movies in this concert that will be fun for the entire family. Be prepared for madcap misadventures and knee-slapping hijinx as the Butte Symphony accom­panies classic movies from the silent era.

Unfinished Symphonies of Great Composer

We will close our 70th Season on a high note with unfinished symphonies by Franz Schubert and Alexander Borodin. The Program will be rounded out with Symphonies for the King's Suppers by Louis XIV's court composer, Michel DeLalande and the first movement of Edouard Lalo's Symphony in G Minor
